Carter's publicist, Steve Rohr said the southern born actress past away Saturday morning. He, nor her husband, actor Hal Holbrook would disclose the cause of death.
"This is a terrible blow to our family," said Holbrook in a written statement. "We would appreciate everyone understanding that this is a private family tragedy."
Carter was best known for playing Southern firecracker, Julia Sugarbaker for seven seasons on "Designing Women" airing on CBS from 1987 to 1993. Most recently Carter guest starred on ABC's "Desperate Housewives" recieving an Emmy nomination in 2007.
Cater is survived by her husband of 26 years, Holbrook and daughters Mary Dixie and Ginna.
